If you were almost bewildered by the sheer volume of tweets, posts, photo galleries and stories flowing out of East Lansing over the weekend — and the week leading up to the MHSAA finals — don’t worry.

You’re not alone.

We sorta felt that way, too.

Oakland County came into last week with 11 teams alive for state championships — and none of them seemed to want to go home early.

All but two of them survived until the finals. Four of them brought home championships.

There were five baseball teams (at least one in each division) that made it through the regional final/quarterfinal duo the weekend prior, gaining themselves a spot in this weekend’s semifinals: Detroit Catholic Central and Rochester Adams in Division 1, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in D2, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest in D3 and Royal Oak Shrine in D4.

For girls soccer? Again, one in each division made it out of regionals the week prior, and all of them won in Tuesday and Wednesday’s semifinals: Troy in D1, Bloomfield Hills Marian in D2, Detroit Country Day in D3, and Shrine with another championship-hunting team in D4.

Softball had just two regional winners — Walled Lake Northern in D1, and a surprising contender in Farmington Hills Mercy in D2 — but both survived Tuesday’s quarterfinals to earn berths in the semis.

That’s … a lot.

Having a handful of teams make it to the final weekend of prep sports has been pretty standard for Oakland County. This was twice that.

So if it seemed like we were all over the place … well, we were.

A total of 19 games covered in a five-day span (20, if you count picking up the Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart-Marcellus baseball final for the Morning Sun on Saturday).

Yeah, it’s a lot, but — just like the participants — there’s nowhere else we’d rather be in mid-June.
