The teenage driver accused of killing three men in an East Oakland crash last month was released from custody on Tuesday by an Alameda County judge, according to reports.

The Oakland 17-year-old faces vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges in connection to the May 16 incident, when he allegedly collided into parked vehicles, jumped the curb and plowed into a group of people on the sidewalk outside East Bay Market & Liquor. Prosecutors, who say the teenager was driving recklessly above 50 mph, believe the crash was related to speeding.

But Judge Arturo Castro said Tuesday that he saw no “intent apparent to harm anyone” in the crash, the Mercury News reported. Castro also said the teenager, whose identity was not disclosed due to his age, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and had no history of reckless driving or “bad blood” with any of the victims.

“A young driver, in the worst possible way, lost control of the car,” Castro said, according to the report.

The release came despite objections from prosecutors. The teenager, who Castro said had shown model behavior while in custody, will be required to remain in his home and wear a monitoring device. His public defender said the teenager had “a lot of support” at home and would be in counseling after his release, according to the Mercury News.

The crash killed Miguel Angel Sanchez Ramirez, 44; Charles Ray Blackmon, 65; and Robert Dixon, 64, of Oakland and Sacramento. The three men died at the scene. Five others were injured, including the teenage driver, who was the sole occupant of his car.

The teenager attempted to run away from the crash, police said, but was restrained by bystanders. Initially praised by Oakland leaders for their bravery, the bystanders came under scrutiny after grainy video surfaced that showed them violently beating the teenager as he tried to cover his face with his arms. Police are also investigating the assault, although no arrests have been announced.
