OAKLAND, Calif. – Peter Wilson scored a stoppage-time equalizer to earn Oakland Roots SC a 1-1 draw against Birmingham Legion FC at the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon after Peter-Lee Vassell had put the visitors ahead late in the first half.
The hosts controlled much of possession in the opening half and went close to taking the lead in the 26th minute when Florian Valot’s pass found Wolfgang Prentice for a first-time shot that was turned wide of the left post by Legion goalkeeper Jassem Koleilat. After creating few chances, however, Birmingham took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Romario Williams’ through-ball sent Vassell through for a powerful strike from just inside the box that dipped underneath the crossbar.
Roots tried to respond after the break, but their efforts opened up spaces for Legion to counterattack. The visitors almost added a second with nine minutes to go off a short corner kick when Samuel Shashoua kept possession and drifted to the top of the penalty area, only to shoot just wide of the left post. Roots leveled in the third minute of stoppage time, however, as Wilson adjusted to the flight of Jesús de Vicente’s corner and put home a left-footed half-volley into the bottom corner of the net, earning the hosts a valuable point.
Takeaways
Oakland Roots SC – In a contest that was always going to set up as a contrast in playing styles, Roots found a late equalizer from Peter Wilson as its persistent pressure failed to deliver in open play. Oakland had two-thirds of the game’s possession and more than twice as many passes in the final third but were thwarted by a good defensive display that allowed only two shots on target before the 2025 Golden Boot winner pulled them level.
Birmingham Legion FC – The visitors did almost everything right in their effort to break aa four-game winless streak, but the side’s propensity for giving up late goals once again came back to haunt them. Legion has now dropped 11 points from winning positions this season, most in the league, and conceded six goals in the final 15 minutes and stoppage time, third-most in the league, a habit the side must curb.
