It’s June, the bustin’-out-all-over month when gays celebrate Pride, dust off their short shorts, and return to the beach en masse. So when better to celebrate … the traditional nuclear family? That doesn’t feel pointed at all.
The city of Fresno, California, has officially declared June to be Traditional Nuclear Family Month after the city’s Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution enshrining the holiday on Tuesday, per the Fresno Bee. The resolution passed 3-2.
What exactly is Traditional Nuclear Family Month? According to one supervisor, Nathan Magsig, the month is meant to honor traditional, heterosexual families — as long as they’re not same-sex families.
“I think the resolution is cleaner specifically talking about moms and dads, the benefits of being raised in a traditional family environment, which I can appreciate, again, as someone who comes from a divorced family,” Magsig said at the Tuesday meeting, per the Bee.
The original resolution added a clause that said that the proposed month would include single mothers, stepparents, and other non-nuclear heterosexual families, but specifically denied a request to add same-sex couples. (So, just to recap: non-nuclear families can be celebrated during Traditional Nuclear Family Month, but not nuclear gay families.)
Facing criticism that the resolution was specifically anti-LGBTQ+, Magsig said that the resolution was pro-family and not against any specific group. Suuuuuuure!
“This resolution doesn’t take away anything from anyone. It doesn’t prohibit anyone from celebrating holidays or any other event. It doesn’t restrict anyone’s rights, nor does it prevent anyone from living life as they choose,” Magsig said. “What it does do is recognize and celebrate an institution that has served as the foundation of civilization for centuries.”
Fresno’s resolution is part of a larger GOP push to honor the nuclear family, which I guess absolutely must happen in June for no particular reason! Illinois congresswoman Mary Miller has introduced a federal piece of legislation looking to recognize June as “Family Month,” while at least seven GOP governors have introduced similar proposals, per the Huffington Post.
Tennessee and Indiana’s governors are looking to rebrand June as “Nuclear Family Month” while the same month in Utah and Arkansas would be “Fidelity Month.” In an apparent attempt to not be like other GOP girls, Alabama’s governor Kay Ivey called her proposal “Strong Families Month,” with an emphasis on fatherhood. (Father’s Day is already in June.) Ron DeSantis, looking to bring it a step further, declared June to be “Faith and Family Month.”
What’s extremely insidious about the GOP’s focus on the family (see what I did there?) during June is that not only are they explicitly denying that LGBTQ+ people cannot be part of traditional families, they are ignoring the hurt that nuclear family can cause for many people, LGBTQ+ or otherwise. As Sarah Schulman wrote in her book Ties That Bind, the nuclear family is often the place where young queer people first experience homophobia. Statistically speaking, LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately likely to be estranged from their families, with many young queer adults experiencing homelessness as a result.
The GOP war on Pride Month is an extension of their ongoing anti-LGBTQ+ culture war, which has been their electoral strategy for quite a few cycles now. And indeed, Magsig is currently running for a seat in the California State Senate.
While Fresno Pride already took place during the first weekend of the month, this is my official plea to all Fresnans: Kiss as much as you can. Do it for the Traditional Nuclear Family!
