A 68-year-old woman made her first appearance in court Thursday on a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter for a collision that killed a pedestrian in Garden Grove nearly a year ago.
Maria Reina Baltazar, who was charged June 8 with gross vehicular manslaughter, was arrested Wednesday and made her first appearance in court in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana on Thursday when her arraignment was rescheduled for July 17 in the West Justice Center in Westminster.
She is accused of killing 46-year-old Christopher Perry of Lakewood July 30, according to Garden Grove police Sgt. Nick Jensen.
Baltazar had trouble negotiating a turn on Woodbury Avenue near Brookhurst Street about 8 a.m. and veered onto the sidewalk, striking the victim, Jensen said.
Bail was set at $50,000 for Baltazar. Prosecutors, who requested $100,000 bail, objected when her defense attorney asked to release the defendant on her own recognizance.
