A man suspected of shooting and killing two people at an apartment complex in Pomona was taken into custody after leading the California Highway Patrol on an hourslong pursuit in northern Los Angeles County on Thursday, authorities said.
The shooting happened in the 100 block of East Monterey Avenue just before 3:20 p.m., according to the Pomona Police Department. When officers arrived, they found a man and a woman in the apartment building’s hallway.
Police say the two died at the scene. Their identities have not been released.
The CHP chased the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Pomona resident Robert Galtman, who was driving a black Kia, on the 5 Freeway until he exited around 6:15 p.m. The pursuit then continued north on Lake Hughes Road in a remote area of Newhall before entering a more populated area of Lancaster nearly 30 minutes later. Video from NewsChopper4 showed at least four CHP vehicles involved int he pursuit.
Just after 7 p.m., a spike strip was deployed on West Avenue K, resulting in at least two flat tires. The car slowed significantly, and a CHP pit maneuver brought the car to a stop on 20th Street West and West Avenue K.
Video showed the suspect get out of the vehicle and comply with CHP officers, who had their guns drawn. He was taken into custody before officers moved in to clear the car around 7:30 p.m.
Officials believe there is no threat to the public.
