An Oceanside man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he struck a 78-year-old woman with his vehicle Thursday afternoon, leaving her in critical condition.

According to the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad, the incident occurred at approximately 4:41 p.m. on June 18.

Detectives said the woman was walking on Long Beach Road and was crossing at the crosswalk at Weidner Avenue when she was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Express van operated by a 24-year-old man.

The woman was transported to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition, police said.

Following an investigation at the scene, detectives determined the driver, Niall Duignan, 24, of Oceanside, was intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody.

Duignan was charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree vehicular assault.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, June 19, at First District Court in Hempstead.
