FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — With California’s special election now one day away, Fresno County’s Election Warehouse is ramping up.
“Things are very busy,” County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James Kus told Action News on Monday. “We’re continuing with our solid turnout.”
Kus confirms nearly 130,000 Fresno County voters have already cast their ballots.
Almost all of the county’s vote centers are now open.
“We have 26 locations plus our downtown office, and we will be opening a one-day pop-up in Mendota open from 7 AM until 8 PM,” Kus said.
Voters are deciding on Proposition 50, the state’s effort to draw new congressional lines that would temporarily favor Democrats after Republicans acted first in Texas.
“We really need to see what happens today and tomorrow,” Kus said.
Voters have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to get in line or use a white ballot drop box.
The deadline to return ballots by mail is even earlier. They must be postmarked on Tuesday.
“You can go to the U.S. Postal Service, but you should be going inside and getting your envelope postmarked,” Kus said.
After the polls close, the race to count all the ballots begins. The first results are expected at 8 PM, followed by at least two updates later that night.
“Because this is a shorter ballot, I do hope to have 95 to 97 percent of all ballots counted and tabulated, and the results provided by next Wednesday,” Kus said.
As the tabulation is underway, election observers will be watching. Local, state, and even federal officials are expected.
“They can raise questions and potentially challenge a process itself based on the law, but they cannot challenge a voter or any of our ballots,” Kus said.
