Mary Kidder Chilcot

OBITUARY

Mary and her family lived in many places over her youth. She was born in San Pedro (CA) and lived in San Diego (CA), Manhasset (Long Island, New York), and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis (Maryland) – because her father was an officer in the U.S. Navy. She moved to Long Beach as a teenager and attended Wilson High School. She graduated from Long Beach City College with a Dental Assistant degree. In 1950, she married William (Bill) Chilcot and they were married until his passing in 2011.

After working as a dental assistant for several years, Mary devoted her attention to being a mom to daughters Allison and Kim. She was the perfect mom – driving them to and watching all their games and activities, serving as Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girl leader, participating in PTA, volunteering at their schools, supporting them in whatever they were doing, always having dinner on the table, and bragging about their accomplishments. Later in life, she happily transitioned to being the perfect grandma to grandkids Andy and Jessie.

Mary was always very active – bicycling, swimming in the Bay, playing volleyball, and walking. She very much enjoyed being part of a “stitchery” group of close friends for many years and was the last surviving member. She also loved her wine – including the old classic Thunderbird (yikes!) which she drank until it was no longer made in 2018. And she loved to eat – we had many fun meals which she would begin with “isn’t this nice” when the family was together.

In her later years, Mary looked forward to the annual family vacations on the coast of Oregon (Cannon Beach area) – where she loved all of the trees and we have many treasured memories.

Mary lived in Belmont Park since her early teens until her passing. She was well known in the neighborhood and had many friends who she enjoyed immensely.

Mary will be very much missed by all who knew and loved her friendliness, caring nature, warmth, self-sufficiency, and humor.

Mary is survived by daughters, Allison (Gary) MacPherson and Kim (John) Garvey; grandchildren, Andy (Sarah) MacPherson and Jessie Garvey; her great grandchildren, May and Oliver MacPherson; and her beloved dog, Cupcake.
