I’ve been living, visiting and serving in the Navy in this town over the last 60 years and am appalled by the ocean pollution on the Strand. I’m especially surprised that there’s not much of a local uproar, demanding progress toward a solution. It’s effectively chased everyone — tourists, swimmers, surfers, dogs and Navy SEALs — out of the water.
I understand it’s a huge international problem to build a treatment plant on the Tijuana River. But at Imperial Beach on the U.S. side, why not a rock jetty out far enough to divert the problem out to sea, or (preferably) south?
Just shameful and unbelievable that we can go to Mars but can’t fix this environmental disaster.
