Bernice Bravo Manzo died June 14 at Kern Medical, according to the coroner.

Bakersfield police said Manzo was driving a black sedan on June 11, 2026, at 2:55 a.m. when she crashed into a KCSO transport vehicle at Chester Avenue and 24th Street. Four people were injured, including three inmates and the driver.

The California Highway Patrol said a preliminary investigation found Manzo was driving westbound on 24th Street at an excessive speed and allegedly ran a red light, hitting the KCSO transport vehicle as it traveled southbound on Chester Avenue and approached the intersection on a green light.

Manzo initially suffered minor to moderate injuries, and law enforcement determined she was driving under the influence, CHP said. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and arrested on suspicion of felony DUI before dying on June 14.
