BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A bicyclist died on Monday afternoon after being struck in a hit-and-run crash involving a suspected DUI on Stockdale Highway and Calloway Drive on Saturday, said Bakersfield police.
The 35-year-old driver, Tamera Elsie Popoy, who allegedly drove under the influence, is now charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. She was already in custody after her arrest on Saturday.
Bakersfield police said the incident happened on Saturday, June 20, at around 1:05 a.m. when officers were called to Stockdale Highway and Calloway Drive regarding a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist.
When they arrived, they found a man in the road, suffering from major injuries. The driver, Popoy, allegedly fled from the area and was later found attempting to enter the Westside Parkway. She was detained and later found to be allegedly under the influence.
At that time, the bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
BPD’s investigation revealed that the bicyclist was riding westbound through the intersection in the crosswalk when he was struck by the driver’s vehicle, who was traveling southbound and failed to stop for the flashing red signal lights.
Popoy was booked into the Kern County Lerdo Detention Center for felony DUI causing injury, initially.
A second alleged DUI driver, Vella Marroquin, 49, drove through the same coned area blocking the road and into the crime scene, nearly striking an officer, said police. She was heavily intoxicated, said officials.
Marroquin was arrested and booked into the Kern County Lerdo Detention Center on DUI-related charges.
Police remind residents that the intersection of Stockdale Highway and Calloway Drive is a roadway with three lanes of traffic in all four directions. The intersection is controlled by 4-way automated traffic signals, which were set to flashing red due to ongoing construction.
All four directions appeared to be flashing properly at the time of the investigation, said BPD.
The bicyclist will be identified at a later time by the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
