FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California is looking for male mentors from across the Central Valley
The BBBSCC says that 80 percent of the children, mainly boys, are facing long waits for a male role model.
Governor Newsom launched the California Men’s Service Challenge, calling for ten thousand men to step forward as mentors, coaches, and community leaders back in July.
Governor Newsom said, “The lack of mentorship is leading to an alarming rise in suicide and disconnection among California’s young men and boys.”
Sergeant Erik Ia, from the Fresno Police Department, shared some of his experience being a mentor for 6 years.
He said,” Mentorship truly changes lives. I’ve seen it firsthand.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central California has served children and families for more than 60 years in Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings, and surrounding counties, offering one-on-one mentoring relationships.
