Sacramento is preparing to host the X Games for the first time, with the three-day event kicking off this Friday at Cal Expo. Crews are finalizing the course, which features a nod to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the Tower Bridge. Officials who helped bring the event to Sacramento hope it will be the first of many. “These events are resumé-builders, the more you can point to the success you’ve had, the more events you attract to your city,” said Mike Testa, president and CEO of Visit Sacramento. “We’ve seen that over the years with everything from music festivals to food conferences to sporting events of all kinds, so it’s a big feather in Sacramento’s hat to be able to host something of this caliber.” Testa said Sacramento’s success in hosting major events helped secure the X Games, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors, boost local businesses, and generate millions of dollars in economic impact. “This event has been around for a long time, it’s got a pretty big following so we expect a lot of people from the Bay Area, different parts of California to come out and support this event and from a tourism standpoint, that’s valuable because it takes a long time to build the facilities at Cal Expo, so we’ve had a lot of folks in town staying in hotels for the weeks leading up to this,” Testa said. While this is the first time the X Games are coming to Sacramento, its reach will extend far beyond those attending in person. Fans are expected to travel from across California and beyond, and the competition will be broadcast nationwide. “The X Games on TV is very exciting right, so that passion can often be felt through the viewer, and then, you expect some scenic shots of Sacramento as they go to commercial.
