A man died Monday morning in a head-on crash in Fresno County.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene at 5:30 a.m. on Manning Avenue, east of Chateau Fresno.

CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said a Toyota Tundra was traveling west in the eastbound lane of Manning when it collided head-on with a Freightliner pulling an empty trailer.

Salas said the Freightliner driver attempted to avoid the collision by swerving.

Following the impact, the Freightliner left the road and came to rest in a nearby grape vineyard.

The Toyota overturned, became fully engulfed in flames, and the driver was ejected, Salas said.

The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Freightliner driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center.

Salas said the driver of the Freightliner was not impaired and was cooperative with the investigation.

It was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor for the Toyota driver.

The crash remains under investigation.
