BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (June 23, 2026) — A bicyclist died at the hospital two days after being hit by a suspected DUI driver Saturday on Stockdale Highway and Calloway Drive in Bakersfield.
The man was reportedly riding his bike westbound on Stockdale Highway in a crosswalk when the southbound motorist failed to stop for the flashing red lights and struck him around 1:05 a.m. on June 20th, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
The suspect, Tamera Elsie Popoy, 35, was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash and fled the scene.
Bakersfield police responded to the crash scene and located the victim down in the roadway with major injuries. The man was transported by ambulance to a hospital where he later died on Monday.
Meanwhile, police caught up with the driver shortly after the crash near Westside Parkway, and she was arrested on charges of felony DUI causing injury. She was booked into the Kern County Lerdo Detention Center. However, now she faces additional charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
