SARATOGA — Three people, including a 17-year-old San Jose boy, died Monday night when the car they were traveling in went off the roadway on Highway 9 and crashed down an embankment, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officers were called at 9:36 p.m. for a report of a crash on Highway 9 east of Redwood Gulch Road, the agency said in a news release. They arrived to find a wrecked 2024 BMW M3 sedan and three occupants who died: the driver, a 21-year-old Yuba City man; a 27-year-old man from Salem, Oregon; and the San Jose teen.
Their names were not publicly released pending their formal identification and notification of their next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
An initial investigation determined that the BMW was eastbound on the highway when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to go off the road and down a steep embankment. A more precise cause for the crash is under investigation.
Highway 9 was closed near the crash site for about three hours while officers examined the scene. The CHP did not release additional details Tuesday morning.
