Margin stoppers, ribbon spools, page-end indicators, carriage release: The parts of a typewriter can feel like powerful poetry for people who are devoted to punching keys and watching metal typebars raise to connect with an inky ribbon and then, quite beautifully, a blank piece of paper.
Perhaps your first typing lessons occurred as you sat in front of a hefty school typewriter, or you’ve never used a typewriter but you’ve marveled at the marvelous machines in a movie.
Maybe you even use one to this day, opting to keep your laptop shut most of the time as you change out ribbons and operate roller knobs.
Whatever “type” of typewriter lover you might be, there’s a place for you at the International Printing Museum’s QWERTY: A Typewriter Festival.
The June 27 event pays type-tastic tribute to National Typewriter Day, with a few typewriter-centric offerings in store.
“Experience the magic of typing on vintage typewriter, see unusual typewriters, win prizes, hear from typewriter experts, shop for your own typewriter, and stock up on type-themed merch,” is the tempting vow.
“You can also bring your own typewriter to show, share, use, or get an estimate for repair during the event.”
Click, clack, click, space bar, carriage return: Once upon a time, typing provided a host of tactile pleasures, and sounds that remain synonymous with the key-lined devices to this day.
Prepare to visit the Carson museum to bask in those sublime sounds and a sociable scene brimming with retro-future moxie.
National Typewriter Day is June 23, by the by, but if you’re devoted to the art of creating stories on your trusty Royal Quiet Deluxe or Corona LC Smith, then you’re busily striking those keys, and watching the timeless parts move and make words, throughout the year.
