BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Cesar Chavez Elementary is getting a new name after a unanimous vote by the Bakersfield City School District board on Tuesday. The process began in May, following sexual abuse allegations by the labor leader.
The district voted unanimously on June 23 to rename Cesar Chavez Elementary to Helen Chavez Elementary. BCSD said in social media post that the board approved the name “to honor Helen Chavez, the matriarch of the farmworker labor movement.”

City documents show “Si Se Puede Elementary School” was also considered during the meeting.
The board consists of Laura Guerrero Salgado, Chris Cruz Boone, Anthony Fuentes, Brooke Malley Ault and Mike Eggert.
