A student at the University of California at Berkeley died in a crash on Interstate 580 near San Quentin, authorities said.
Paloma Fabiana Guadalupe Foster, 35, was from Fullerton in Orange County, according to the Marin County coroner’s office.
The crash happened at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes, the California Highway Patrol. Foster was a passenger in Nissan Versa.
The driver fell asleep and the Nissan crashed into the center median wall, the CHP said. Then the car veered to the shoulder, went off the road and crashed into a hillside near the San Quentin exit.
Foster died at a hospital. The 32-year-old Oakland man driving the car and a 7-year-old boy in the back seat were not injured, the CHP said.
The boy is Foster’s son, according to an online fundraising site a friend launched at shorturl.at/ece2G.
The CHP does not suspect the driver of intoxication and did not arrest him. The agency is still investigating the crash.
Foster and the others were returning home from the GrooveWell Vacation festival in Mendocino County, KTVU reported.
