California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County counsel are working together to block a planned U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Santa Clara County.

The federal government leased nearly 25 acres of land just outside Gilroy last year.

On Thursday morning, the pair announced they filed a preliminary injunction aimed at blocking development of the facility.

The legal move builds on a lawsuit filed earlier this month by the California Attorney General’s Office.

Santa Clara County officials say they were not notified that the federal government was planning to build an immigration detention facility on the property when it was leased.

The lawsuit alleges the federal government violated state and local laws in developing the facility.
