Council office cancels 4th of July events

Council District 14—Fourth of July celebrations planned this weekend for Boyle Heights, Eagle Rock, El Sereno, and Lincoln Heights have been canceled by Councilmember Ysabel Jurado in the wake of the Boyle Heights warehouse fire. Jurado, in a statement issued Wednesday, said the events sponsored by her office were called off out of an abundance of caution and “out of respect for communities still dealing with the aftermath of this emergency.” The events will be rescheduled, she said. Jurado canceled last year’s Independence Day celebrations in her district after immigration sweeps and raids.  Meanwhile, in neighboring East Los Angeles, the office of County Supervisor Hilda Solis said a Fourth of July celebration with a drone show is still scheduled to proceed at the East L.A. Civic Center on Sunday, June 28.

Boyle Heights/East L.A.—Hundreds of residents affected by the Boyle Heights warehouse fire lined up at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in East Los Angeles this week for free medical care, masks, air filters and food. Via Care Community Health Center, working with L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis’ office, treated residents reporting breathing problems, headaches, irritation and high blood pressure. Providers said the mostly Latino, working-class community faces both toxic smoke exposure and fears tied to immigration enforcement. L.A. Daily News

Author speaks at her old Highland Park middle school

Highland Park—Reyna Grande, author of the new memoir, “Migrant Heart,” talks about what it was like to go back and speak at her old middle school in Highland Park. It was her first time back at Luther Burbank Middle School since graduating in 1990. “When I was encouraging [students] to chase their dreams,” she said, “it felt like I was traveling back in time just to tell teenage Reyna, ‘You can do it.’” OC Register
