SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego authorities have identified the woman found dead in the Pacific Ocean last week as a former San Diego athlete.
Summer Nash, 34, was found floating in the ocean on June 18 near the 5000 block of Newport Avenue, close to the Ocean Beach Pier, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
Lifeguards pulled her from the water around 3 p.m., but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nash was a star athlete and coach. She played volleyball for San Diego State and Florida International universities.
She also coached several teams during her athletic career, including the Tamarack Beach Volleyball Club, Torrey Pines High School, Mira Costa College, San Diego State University and WAVE Beach Volleyball Club. She was also an assistant coach for the Stanford Beach Volleyball program.
Nash’s former coach, Coach Deitre, posted a tribute on Instagram saying she is “heartbroken to learn of the passing of my former player.” She continued, in part, “My heart aches for her family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose lives she touched. There are simply no words for a loss like this.”
Her cause of death is under investigation by the San Diego Police Department.
