Looking for a way to beat the heat while staying active? In-Shape Fitness’ Southwest Bakersfield location is offering swim lessons and water-based workouts for a range of ages and skill levels, with programming running through September.

In-Shape offers swim lessons for infants, children and adults, starting as young as 6 months old. Angelyn Pludio, who works at In-Shape, said the goal is to teach “a life-saving tool” in a safe environment. Lessons are available to both members and nonmembers, with sessions offered from April to September.

The pool ranges from 3 1/2 feet deep to 4 1/2 feet deep, allowing it to be used for lap swimming, swim instruction, therapy and aqua classes.

For people focused on fitness, In-Shape has 10 lap lanes available by reservation. Swimmers can reserve a lane for 30 minutes at a time through the facility’s app.

Aqua classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m.

Swim instructor and trainer Melissa Bohan demonstrated several water-safety and survival skills taught in lessons, including floating on the back, calling for help, swimming to the wall and getting out of the pool.

“One of the most vital skills here for survival is making sure that you can open up your eyes underwater, so if you accidentally do fall in, you know where you’re going,” Bohan said.

Bohan also demonstrated exercises designed to help children become comfortable submerging and retrieving objects underwater, as well as basic stroke development. She said In-Shape also offers adult instruction, including private lessons for adults who may feel intimidated learning in a group setting, along with group adult classes.

Swim lesson times include Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon, starting with 4:30 p.m. classes through 6 p.m. classes, and Saturday morning sessions beginning at 9:30 a.m. for parent-and-child lessons, followed by additional ages starting at 10:15 a.m.

In-Shape said enrollment is still open, with lessons continuing through September. Interested participants can sign up online.
