BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Eleven people were arrested and about 1.62 tons of trash — around 3,240 pounds — were removed during an encampment clean-up operation in Bakersfield’s Old Town Kern area, Bakersfield police said.
Officials said the sweep took place Wednesday, June 24, and focused on Baker, Kern, Dolores, Inyo, and Chico streets.

Before law enforcement stepped in, Be Finally Free, an outreach provider contracted with the city, went to the area to provide resources to people experiencing homelessness.
The 11 people arrested were charged with public nuisance, illegal lodging, drug paraphernalia and outstanding warrants, police said.

Bakersfield City Code Enforcement personnel cleared seven encampments. The City of Bakersfield Animal Control seized 10 dogs, and the owners were offered spay-and-neuter services.
