Matt Waldron took a step back in his latest rehab-assignment start in Triple-A El Paso’s 11-0 loss at Sugar Land on Thursday, while the start of Jake Cronenworth’s rehab assignment was delayed by at least a day.

On the concussion list since May 5, Cronenworth joined El Paso on Thursday and was set to bat second and play second base. That, however, was contingent on Major League Baseball approving his return to play and word did not arrive in time for the 32-year-old infielder to play Thursday.

The Padres are hoping Cronenworth receives clearance Friday.

Meantime, Waldron (0-1, 1.35 ERA) struck out four but allowed two runs on two hits and four walks in 2⅔ innings in his third start as he attempts to return from the brachialis injury that sent him to the shelf last month.

Waldron threw 31 of his 59 pitches for strikes.

Center fielder Carlos Rodriguez (.779 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his on-base streak to 33 games.

Designated hitter Marcos Castañon (.802 OPS) went 2-for-4, left fielder Nick Schnell (.798 OPS) had two hits and catcher Blake Hunt (.913 OPS) had a pinch-hit double in his return to El Paso.

The Chihuahuas are 35-43.
