VonKaenel credited the collaborative with demonstrating how partnerships can strengthen local journalism and expand community reach.
Lee said the acquisition aligns with his broader commitment to sustaining local news organizations.
“For me, it’s just trying to be a good steward and caretaker of local news,” Lee said. “It’s important.”
While acknowledging that The OBSERVER and News & Review have not always shared the same perspectives, Lee said he recognizes the publication’s long-standing role in Sacramento’s media landscape.
“You say what you want to about Jeff and the history of the News & Review. We haven’t always been aligned, but I see the value and the importance of having a healthy News & Review,” he said.
Lee also expressed hope that the publication eventually will rebuild staffing capacity and expand original reporting, though he described that as a long-term goal rather than an immediate objective.
The agreement also expands Lee Publishing Company’s geographic footprint. Combined with recent growth in Stockton, the company now has the ability to offer advertising and media services across a large portion of Northern California, stretching from Stockton to Chico.
Still, Lee said business opportunities were not the primary motivation behind the transition.
Asked how he felt about being entrusted with the legacy publication, Lee called the decision an honor.
“I’m honored that they look upon us with that regard,” Lee said. “They’ve spent their lives building that legacy, and I’m respectful of that.”
For both organizations, the transition represents an effort to preserve independent local journalism in a rapidly changing media environment while ensuring that a publication founded nearly four decades ago can continue serving future generations of readers.
