One man was left dead and another was left in critical condition after a shooting late Sunday, June 28 in San Jose, California, about a block away from a World Cup fan zone.
The San Jose Police Department was alerted to the shooting at about 9:12 p.m. in the area of North Market Street and West Santa Clara Street, less than half a mile from the San Pedro Market Square, where the San Jose Earthquakes is hosting its Soccer Celebration, a promoted watch party event by the FIFA World Cup.
The organization was not hosting any watch parties at the time of the shooting, as the match between Canada and South Africa was played at noon on June 28. Additionally, the San Jose Police Department noted that the shooting was not related to the watch party event.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan released a statement about the shooting to Reuters.

“This shooting happened near an area where families and fans have been gathering for our World Cup watch parties, and that makes the brazenness of this crime even more unacceptable,” Mahan said in a statement on Monday, according to Reuters.
“I am grateful that Sunday’s programming had ended hours earlier, and there is no indication this violence was connected to the event.”
“San Jose has safely welcomed hundreds of thousands of people downtown, and we are not going to let one criminal act scare our community away from public spaces that belong to them.”
When officers arrived at the shooting on Sunday, they located a man lying on the sidewalk and another man several yards away, who suffered from at least one gunshot wound, according to the San Jose Police Department.
Responding San Jose Police Department officers attempted life-saving measures on both men as emergency medical personnel made their way to the scene.
One man ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and he has since stabilized from his injuries.
The San Jose Police Department noted that it believed this was an isolated incident and is still investigating the shooting.
The department also noted that it will ensure officers are present at the Monday, June 29 San Pedro Market Square watch party to ensure public safety.
“Although the incident was not related to any watch party activity and occurred away from San Pedro Square, SJPD will be ensuring officers are visible in and around the area today, so fans and visitors feel safe,” the department said in a statement.
