I wanted to address a real, persistent problem in our city that requires the help of community members, businesses and leaders: the homeless crisis in Coronado.
But I’m not talking about homeless PEOPLE. While unhoused individuals can– and do–come to Coronado, our homeless population is typically counted in the single digits. In some recent counts, it was reported as low as one person. While these unhoused humans deserve our compassion and support, there is a bigger crisis looming in our community.
Homeless animals. It seems like almost every day, a pet is found on the loose—wandering the streets of Coronado. These pets are alone and scared, darting in traffic, seeking shelter, medical care, and love. Last year alone, PAWS of Coronado took in more than 248 stray animals. We’re talking cats and dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs, birds and reptiles. Heck, we’ve even had snakes and a potbelly pig!
The best part? Animal adoptions from PAWS are on the rise! Last year, PAWS helped more than 311 animals find homes. That’s an increase of 38% over the year before. This includes animals from other shelters that we were able to “transfer in” when we have the space.
But it takes a village to help PAWS give the level of care these animals need and deserve.
Here’s how you can help:
Volunteer to foster. PAWS is always looking for animal fosters. These are people who can open their homes to a pet…even for day. Even if just for a sleepover! Just a short time can provide an anxious dog with a central nervous system reset and a much-needed break.
Volunteer to walk dogs, snuggle cats. While PAWS has paid employees, the nonprofit runs with the aid of dozens of volunteers. PAWS even has a behavioral training program.
Voice support of PAWS to the City. We rely on help from the City of Coronado which funds a portion of our day-to-day operations. And as the recent recipients of a $15,000 grant from the city, we say THANK YOU!
Sponsor fundraising and dog vests. We rely on businesses to sponsor events like the Ruff Run and we are seeking business sponsors for our bright yellow “Adopt Me” vests.
Donate to PAWS. We need community members like you to donate to PAWS or take part in the Furever Fund, in partnership with the Coronado Community Foundation.
