An early Jake Cronenworth home run preceded a quick return from his rehab assignment. Perhaps Luis Campusano will be on a similar track.
The 27-year-old catcher homered in his first rehab game, while right-hander Germán Márquez was roughed up out of the bullpen in Triple-A El Paso’s 10-5 loss on Sunday to visiting Sacramento.
Campusano went 2-for-2 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored while playing six innings behind the plate. He is returning from a broken toe that sent him to the injured list on May 7, although he also tweaked an oblique during his ramp-up.
Campusano was hitting .288/.362/.596 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 18 games when he hit in the injured list.
Padres began Tuesday ranking ninth in weighted runs created-plus (75). Even with all his time off, Campusano leads that union with a 166 wRC+, followed by Rodolfo Durán (67) and Freddy Fermin (48).
Márquez followed right-hander Sean Boyle (6-5, 5.92 ERA) into the game, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in the sixth.
It was Márquez’s second straight relief appearance on his rehab assignment as he comes back from forearm nerve inflammation. He has a 3.57 ERA in 17⅔ innings, but has allowed four runs over 2 1/3 innings as a relief.
Boyle allowed six runs in five innings in the loss.
El Paso catcher Anthony Vilar (.695 OPS) went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, right fielder Bryce Johnson (.608 OPS) had three hits and third baseman Clay Dungan (.738 OPS) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
El Paso is 36-46.
