BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 63-year-old man killed in an alleged DUI crash early Sunday was identified as Gregory Lee Fraley, of Bakersfield, said the Kern County coroner.
The coroner said on June 28, 2026, at about 12:06 a.m., Fraley was driving near the intersection of California Avenue and Chester Lane when he was struck by another vehicle. He died shortly afterward at Kern Medical.
Bakersfield police officers said they arrived to find a silver Mazda hatchback and a silver BMW sedan involved in the crash. Both vehicles were occupied by men, and neither vehicle had any passengers.
According to police, an investigation found the BMW was traveling southbound on Chester Lane when the Mazda entered the intersection westbound against a red traffic signal, resulting in the crash.

Police said the driver of the BMW sustained severe injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Fraley was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
The driver of the Mazda was identified as 23-year-old Gavin Mundschau of Bakersfield. According to Bakersfield police, Mundschau was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI. Police said he sustained minor injuries, was treated, and was later arrested.
Mundschau faces several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, driving under the influence of alcohol 0.8% or more causing injury, and traffic-related violations.

Court records show Mundschau pleaded not guilty to all charges on June 30. He is due back in court on July 14 for a preliminary hearing.
