BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Cheers erupted inside Just Wing It in southwest Bakersfield Tuesday night as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 in the World Cup.
Fans packed the restaurant to watch the knockout-round match, celebrating each goal before erupting once again as the final whistle secured the U.S. a spot in the next round, where the team will face Belgium.

Before the match, many supporters expressed confidence in the United States’ chances.
“I’ll tell you right now. USA, we are going to get down, and we are going to do our thing. We’re not scared. We’re not scared. We are coached well and listen. We are a powerhouse; we’re going to go in there and make it happen. You’re going to see the USA is going to do what they’re going to do,” Pobo Gonzales said.
For many fans, however, the night was about more than just advancing in the tournament. David Newton said watching alongside other supporters made the experience even more memorable.
“It’s just fun being here with the whole crowd rooting for the same team,” Newton said.

Several fans also said this year’s tournament feels especially meaningful because it has sparked excitement for soccer across the United States.
Aaron Hegde said the U.S. reaching the knockout stage is significant not only for the national team but for the sport as a whole.
“We never made it this far. So I think this is great. Plus, it’s not just the U.S. Canada and Mexico have made it into the knockout stage. So all the host nations have made it. So I think this is great for soccer in the U.S.,” Hegde said.
Gonzales said he hopes the team’s success encourages more young people to get involved in soccer.
“I believe that kids are seeing these athletes, and these athletes are amazing, what they can do with their feet. So I hope that we continue to just get our kids into soccer and let’s see this sport continue to grow in the U.S.,” he said.
Fans also said the World Cup has become an opportunity to unite people through sports.
“We know that our country is hurting a little bit and bleeding out. So for us to come together in the World Cup is the biggest blessing,” one supporter said.

Others reflected on what this year’s U.S. team has accomplished after missing the previous World Cup.
“I was disappointed when we didn’t make the last World Cup, and now just to see these guys come together and make the progress they’ve made, and just come together as a team with the new coach too, I think they’ve looked really incredible. And I’m really excited to see what it holds,” another fan said.
As the United States prepares for its Round of 16 matchup against Belgium, Bakersfield fans say they’ll continue following the team’s World Cup run while hoping the excitement surrounding this year’s tournament leaves a lasting impact on the sport in the United States.
