When Route 66 was officially established in 1926, it revolutionized how Americans traveled. The road stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles and has been immortalized in song and on the big screen.
Although the highway was bypassed by I-40 and ultimately decommissioned in the 1980s, thousands of drivers still make the trip on the historic road each year.
As Route 66 celebrates 100 years of road trips, travel writer Christopher Reynolds spoke with historian Ian Bowen about the highway’s impact on American culture.
