WARWICK, R.I. (WJAR) — The Warwick Police Department said that a rabid that was found in the area of Oakhurst Avenue on June 28 tested positive for rabies.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said that two dogs were exposed to the racoon and one person may have been exposed.
Anyone who may have had direct contact with a raccoon or another wild animal should immediately contact RIDOH’s Center for Acute Infectious Disease Epidemiology at 401-222-2577 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or 401-276-8046 after hours.
RIDOH recommends the following precautions to avoid rabies:
Keep dogs, cats, and ferrets up to date on rabies vaccinations.Avoid contact with wild or stray animals.Do not feed wild animals or leave pet food outdoors.Keep pets under control and do not allow them to roam unsupervised.Report animal bites to your local Animal Control Officer.Secure garbage containers to prevent attracting wildlife.Comment with Bubbles
