“Last night’s tragedy is another heartbreaking reminder that the consequences of our choices behind the wheel can be irreversible.
This crash occurred within a construction zone that has now been active for its third consecutive year. Throughout that time, we have repeatedly witnessed posted speed limits being ignored, creating unnecessary risks for motorists, construction workers, and first responders alike.
As with any serious crash, there were undoubtedly many factors that contributed to what happened. The official investigation will determine those facts. What cannot be disputed, however, is the outcome.
Four people lost their lives.
The individual whose decisions set these events in motion has forever altered not only their own future, but the futures of countless others. Families have lost loved ones. Children, parents, siblings, and friends are now faced with a lifetime of grief. Their lives have been changed forever, and generations to come will feel the effects of what happened in just a matter of seconds.
No destination, no text message, no appointment, and no moment of impatience is worth a human life.
As first responders, we witness the aftermath of these tragedies far too often. We see the devastation left behind long after the emergency vehicles have departed. We see the families waiting for answers, the friends struggling to understand, and the responders who carry these scenes with them for years.
Please, slow down. Obey posted speed limits, especially in construction zones. Eliminate distractions. Make good decisions every time you get behind the wheel.
One poor decision can change the course of history for multiple families. Last night is a painful reminder that every choice matters.
