Two of the events I’m most excited to highlight this week are Patiyochella, a fundraiser show for the Oakland Elizabeth House, and “The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane,” a documentary about an Oakland jazz musician who was on the front lines of social justice.

KPFA presents: ‘The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane’

Berkeley radio station KPFA is hosting a screening in Oakland of the documentary “The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane.” The film by director Maureen Gosling and producer Jed Riffe follows the life of longtime Oakland resident, jazz singer, and social justice activist Barbara Dane, who died in 2024. The screening will be followed by a live performance by country artist Miko Marks.

Comedy Show at Akoma

Akoma is a new Black-owned lounge and community space located where SoMar Bar and Lounge used to be. At Akoma, customers can consume psilocybin and cannabis drinks while also enjoying a variety of events, from yoga, fashion shows, to comedy. This weekend, comedians Jenny Roberts and RJ Koenig are co-producing a series of shows called “Garden of Earthly Delights.” The show on Friday features an all-female lineup.

Patiyochella 2025: A Benefit Show for Oakland Elizabeth House

Patiyochella is an annual backyard music festival founded by Kelsie Axelrod in 2015. Last year, the event moved to 7th West in West Oakland. This year’s fest includes a DJ set by Decibel and performances by five local bands, including Arcade9, Slow Coast, Sokojo, Van Goat, and Wave Wise. Proceeds from the event will benefit Oakland Elizabeth House, a women’s transitional housing organization that, since 1991, has provided a residential program for women with children who have experienced homelessness, domestic violence, addiction, or poverty.

Sweater Weather Pop-Up Shop

This weekend, Patti Furey Crane, founder of Mariposa Baking Company, will partner with her sister, Annemarie Furey, a Vermont-based apparel designer, for a pop-up at Mariposa’s headquarters showcasing their two crafts — baking and fashion — and the power of women-led small businesses.

Hot Tickets in The Town this week: Portugal. The Man

John Baldwin Gourley and his wife Zoe Manville now make up the band Portugal. The Man, which is due to release its tenth studio album, “Shish,” on Nov. 7. The duo, along with a group of touring musicians, is making a stop in Oakland during its “Denali Tour.”

Coming soon to The Town: ‘Let’s Break Bread Together: A tribute to Whitney Houston’

The “Let’s Break Bread Together” concert was originally launched more than two decades ago by then symphony director Michael Morgan, who died in 2021. Now, the current music director, Kedrick Armstrong, has carried on this yearly tradition. This year the performance will honor pop diva Whitney Houston.
