A man was pulled from a canal Friday evening after traveling at least a half-mile downstream before being rescued.

The man was pulled from the water about 6:45 p.m. at Franklin, near Belmont Avenues.

Fresno Police Lt. James Rossetti said officers and emergency personnel performed life-saving measures before the man was taken to a hospital.

His condition was not immediately known.

It was also unclear how the man ended up in the canal.

Rossetti said a police helicopter spotted him in the water, leading to the rescue.
