Trial is scheduled for a Road Commission of Oakland County employee accused in a New Year’s Day fatal hit-and-run crash while on the job.
Jury selection is set to begin on Nov. 9 in Oakland County Circuit Court for the case against Bryan Derryberry, charged with leaving the scene of a pedestrian fatality. According to the Farmington Hills Police Department, Derryberry was operating a county snow plow truck when he allegedly struck 68-year-old Edward Detroit of Sterling Heights, rendering him unconscious, and then drove away. Emergency responders called to the scene on a report of an unconscious man lying on the side of Middlebelt Round found Detroit there at approximately 8 a.m. on Jan. 1. Detroit was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Derryberry was a 3-year employee for the RCOC at the time of the crash. His court file shows he’s a Swartz Creek resident.
The charge is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Derryberry is out of custody on a $100,000 personal bond, which requires no cash or surety to be posted. The trial is assigned to Judge Martha Anderson.

Another fatal hit-and-run incident in Oakland County that happened a few weeks before the one allegedly involving Derryberry was resolved with a no contest plea in April. Devin Asa-Amon Light was sentenced in May to 320 days in jail followed by two years probation for failing to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death: disabled homeless veteran William Mapp was in a wheelchair when he was struck in Oak Park on Nov. 22, 2025. Light was sentenced by Oakland County Circuit Judge Jeffery Matis.
Light, 29, is scheduled to be released from the Oakland County Jail next February.
