A former motel site along Stockton Boulevard will be celebrated Tuesday as a new affordable housing community in South Sacramento.Mutual Housing California will hold a grand opening for San Juan One apartments, a 113-home affordable housing development located at 5700 Stockton Boulevard.The property dates back to around 1940, when it operated as the San Juan Motel. The motel closed in 2010, and the long-vacant site has now been transformed into an all-electric residential community for families earning between 30% and 60% of the area median income.The grand opening celebration is scheduled to begin with guest arrivals, artist activations and interview availability at 9:30 a.m. The formal program is set to begin at 10:10 a.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting at 10:52 a.m. and community tours at 11 a.m.Local leaders, project partners and residents are expected to attend, including Sacramento County Supervisor Patrick Kennedy, Sacramento Mayor Pro Tem Eric Guerra, Mutual Housing California CEO Craig Adelman, California Energy Commissioner Andrew McAllister, Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency Deputy Executive Director of Development Kecia Boulware, and SMUD Board Member Dave Tamayo.The project includes 113 permanently affordable homes, a large community room, a children’s playground, a pool, laundry facilities, EV charging stations, outdoor seating areas and resident services.The site also features the restored San Juan Motel sign and 18 colorful, multi-story community murals by local artist Karen Chen.Mutual Housing California said the development is part of the ongoing effort to revitalize Stockton Boulevard and expand affordable housing options in the Sacramento region.Rent at San Juan Apartments is listed as starting as low as $771. However, the lottery waitlist application period is now closed, and people have started moving in.
