Construction has begun on a new community center in Waterford Township.
In November 2024, voters approved a 21-year, $36.4 million bond to purchase 51 acres of land on OCC’s Highland campus at 7350 Cooley Lake Road.
Since then, Plante Moran Realpoint has been coordinating the project for the township. Neumann Smith architecture/engineering firm was hired and Frank Rewold was brought on as construction manager.
The 56,628 square-foot facility will feature:
A wider variety of recreation programs focused on both the mental and physical wellbeing of participants of all ages.
Amenities tailored to the interests of Waterford’s growing population of older adults, such as indoor pickleball, table tennis, Meals on Wheels, fitness and enrichment classes designed for seniors and more.
More gymnasium space will be available for programs, rentals and leagues.

Added outdoor recreation amenities that will include pickleball courts, basketball courts, softball field, community courtyard and amphitheater, outdoor restrooms, dog park, and more.
Connectivity to Hess-Hathaway Park by way of a trail connection on the west side of the property.
Once construction fencing is installed, access to the Oakland Community College Highland Lakes Campus from Cooley Lake Road will be restricted for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to continue through early 2028.
In addition, the grassy area north of Cooley Lake Road will not be available for recreational activities, including dog walking and similar uses, for the duration of the project.
Students, faculty, and campus visitors accessing Levinson Hall should enter via Marylestone Street.
Access to the remainder of the campus will be available through the Hospital Road entrance.
