There is so much happening in Oakland this weekend that we had to throw in a bonus event. That’s what summer in The Town is like. There’s endless opportunities to experience art, live music, films by Oakland filmmakers, and so much more. 

If you want to be outdoors, you can hit the Temescal Street Fair or join a historical walk led by the Oakland Heritage Alliance. If you want an infusion of culture, jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo will play at Yoshi’s from July 10 to 12 and be present at the opening for his latest exhibit of paintings, “Rebirth Through Time.”

Hot Ticket in The Town this week: 20th annual Temescal Street Fair

The family-friendly free festival in North Oakland will feature two music stages, including a HipHop TV stage that will honor the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party with a performance by SambaFunk and DJ sets by Davey D, Tabu and DC is Chillin.’ The main stage will feature performances by artists such as rapper J. Walt and singer-songwriter B. DeVeaux, both alums of Oakland School for the Arts. The festival will also include a fashion show, a TURFinc dance battle, an artisan market and more.

‘Wood Street’ documentary at Grand Lake Theater

This film by journalist and filmmaker Caron Creighton follows a year in the life of Oakland’s largest unhoused encampment as its residents face eviction. The documentary has already sold out a screening at the New Parkway, but there are still tickets available for a screening the next day at the Grand Lake Theater.

Pete Escovedeo’s ‘Rebirth Through Time’ art opening

The legendary percussionist always comes back to his hometown to celebrate his birthday by showcasing his artwork and playing shows at Yoshi’s. The exhibit of his pen and ink paintings will be on display through July 31.

Test your U.S. History trivia event

The Oakland Public Library is celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary with a special trivia event where you can test your U.S. history and civics knowledge, based on questions from the U.S. naturalization test. The winner will receive an OPL tote bag.

‘House of the Dragon’ season 3 watch party

If you have been obsessing over the popular HBO series, a prequel to “Game of Thrones,” then head to Golden Ratio on Franklin Street , where you can gather with other fans eager to follow Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s quest for the Iron Throne. The event kicks off each Sunday with an open discussion among attendees, a screening of the previous episode, followed by a watch party for the new episode.

Historical walk of the F. M. “Borax” Smith Estate

The palm trees that lined 9th Avenue from East 24th to East 28th streets are the remnants of Arbor Villa, the 35-acre estate of Francis Marion “Borax” Smith, who cofounded The Realty Syndicate, Oakland’s leading real estate development group at the time. Smith was also influential in developing the Key System, a privately-owned transit system that served Alameda and Contra Costa counties for decades between 1903 and 1960. This Saturday, the Oakland Heritage Alliance, with tour guide Phil Bellman, will lead participants around those palms along with Oak Hall, the Mary R. Smith Cottages and other historic houses, including ones designed by Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan, that were part of the historic estate. This is a two-mile-long hilly walk.

Coming soon to The Town: Melba Moore at Yoshi’s

The actress and R&B singer Melba Moore, who started performing on Broadway stages in the late 1960s, recently self-published a memoir, “This Is It: Marvelous & Getting Better.”  She is going on tour and will play a show in Oakland in August that will feature her classic hits “You Stepped Into My Life” and “Love’s Comin’ at Cha” as well as songs from her years on Broadway.
