Construction began on July 6, 2026, at the California State University Fullerton Center for Healthy Neighborhoods to renovate the center’s facilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
According to Executive Director Dr. Iris Aguilar, the construction will last for an estimated four weeks. Physical activity programs such as the center’s Zumba and yoga classes will be temporarily canceled during that period. Regardless, Aguilar believes that the construction will not cause any major problems. The construction comes at a convenient time, given that the center’s monthly community meetings are not hosted in July.
The ADA upgrades consist of adjustments to the center’s current facilities, such as raising light switches to 34 to 48 inches and ensuring all bathrooms are ADA-compliant, with toilet rooms requiring a 60-inch-diameter turning space and specific height requirements for sinks and grab bars. Other examples of current ADA standards include the removal of “architectural barriers” that restrict access for people with disabilities and the establishment of accessible routes (e.g., pavements, pedestrian pathways, hallways) with a minimum clear width of 36 inches.
Following the construction, the center will resume many of its activities. The center’s Academic Success Program and physical activities will begin again in August, and the center will continue to recruit CSUF interns.
