Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded to two residential structure fires within 20 minutes of each other Friday afternoon.
The first fire was reported at 4:51 p.m. at a four-unit residential building in the 5300 block of Winfield Way in Carmichael. Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames coming from one unit and deployed multiple hose lines while conducting primary searches of all units to ensure no one was still inside.
The fire spread into the attic, affecting three of the four units before crews extinguished it. One adult man was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after suffering smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the Carmichael fire remains under investigation by the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District Investigation Team.
Nineteen minutes later, at 5:10 p.m., firefighters responded to a second residential fire in the 6900 block of Braxton Avenue in Citrus Heights. According to preliminary information, the homeowner was barbecuing when the fire ignited nearby dry grass and spread into the home’s attic.
Firefighters contained the fire to the attic, preventing significant damage to the interior of the residence. No injuries were reported in the second fire.
Metro Fire reminded residents to leave immediately, stay out and call 911 from a safe location if a fire starts in their home, and never re-enter a burning building.
