An off-duty Long Beach police officer opened fire on two robbery suspects Sunday afternoon, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. near Bixby Road and Orange Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Police said the off-duty officer was approached by two male suspects. One of the men pointed what is believed to have been a firearm at the officer while the second suspect robbed him.
The officer, who was not injured, responded by firing multiple rounds at the suspects, police said.
Both suspects fled the area after the shooting, and investigators have not determined whether either was struck by the gunfire.
Footage of the aftermath obtained by KTLA shows a large police presence at the scene, which was cordoned off as detectives gathered evidence and crime scene technicians processed the area.

One technician was seen photographing a white SUV that may belong to the off-duty officer. It remains unclear whether the officer was approached while inside the vehicle.

The officer has not been publicly identified.
It’s unknown what property, if any, was taken from the officer, nor has a description been released of the two suspects involved the alleged incident.
The Long Beach Police Department is investigating both the robbery and the officer-involved shooting.
As with all officer-involved shootings, the department said the incident will undergo a comprehensive, multi-level review.
