Oakland officers fatally shoot person police describe as ‘armed and dangerous’

Oakland police fatally shot an armed person Monday afternoon after authorities said the individual lunged at officers with a weapon.

The shooting happened on the 4000 block of International Boulevard at about 2 p.m. after the California Highway Patrol requested assistance from Oakland police, the department said.

Officers found the armed person on International Boulevard near 40th Avenue and ordered them to comply, police said. The person did not follow the commands and allegedly lunged toward officers with a weapon, prompting officers to use both less-lethal weapons and gunfire, according to the department.

The person was struck and died at the scene, despite efforts by officers to provide medical aid. Police said weapons were recovered at the location, but did not say what kind.

No officers or bystanders were physically injured.

The officers who fired their weapons will be placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with department policy.

Oakland police are conducting criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is also investigating independently, and the city’s Community Police Review Agency has been notified.
