OAKLAND — A 37-year-old man who told police he was shot Monday night while driving in East Oakland was in stable condition Tuesday, authorities said.

According to initial reports, the man told police he was driving in the 10000 block of E Street about 9:30 p.m. Monday when he saw some people arguing on the street, heard gunshots and realized he had been wounded in the leg.

He drove a short distance before stopping and calling a relative who took him to a hospital, authorities said.

No other injuries were reported.

Police are trying to determine what prompted the gunfire and if the man was an intended target or was struck by a stray bullet.
