Los Angeles County is asking East Los Angeles residents whether to rename county-owned streets, parks, monuments, artwork and programs bearing César Chávez’s name following recent allegations of sexual abuse against the late labor leader.

The county launched a six-question survey that will remain open through July 26 to gather community input before deciding whether to rename county-owned property in unincorporated East Los Angeles. Cities within the county will make their own decisions.

County official Avianna Uribe said leaders want residents to help guide the process.

“These are the community street signs. We really want to be thoughtful about how we approach this so we need the input of the residents first and foremost.”

Longtime East Los Angeles resident Adair Campos said she welcomes the opportunity to share her opinion after residents had little opportunity to weigh in when officials renamed Brooklyn Avenue to César E. Chávez Avenue in 1994.

“There’s nothing here that would give us any kind of attachment to César Chávez, just because it’s a Mexican neighborhood you think it’s okay to just rename it after him. Put it in Downtown rename olive rename main(street).”

Campos said she supports only three options.

“Either give it to Dolores Huerta, give it to the Filipino gentleman Itliong or send it back to Brooklyn avenue.”

She said the county’s decision to seek public input now is long overdue.

“It took this long to get them to realize, maybe we should ask,” Campos said. “There’s always a learning curve I’m sad it took 30 years but at least it happened.”

County officials said the survey marks the first step in the process. The county plans to hold additional community meetings before making any decisions, and residents can submit responses at LACounty.gov.
