Golden Charter Academy celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony of its new state-of-the-art campus Wednesday morning, marking major expansion for the Fresno charter school and its unique partnership with the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.

The campus at 452 N. Pacific Ave., adjacent to the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, will welcome more than 500 students for the 2026-27 school year. As the first TK-8 environmental stewardship zoo school in the country, Golden Charter Academy integrates traditional classroom instruction with hands-on learning through its partnership with the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, giving students the opportunity to study science, conservation and environmental stewardship in a real-world setting.

Founder Robert Golden, who played seven seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, called the opening the culmination of years of perseverance after overcoming construction delays and other challenges.

“Even if I did win a Super Bowl, it would not feel as great as this day,” Golden said. “This ain’t my school. This is our school. We did it.”

Golden also noted the school’s academic growth, saying students posted the academy’s strongest test score gains to date, with improvements of more than 35 points in English language arts and 48 points in math.

Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer credited Golden’s vision and the school’s innovative educational model.

“We are here to celebrate what will happen within the walls of these buildings,” Dyer said. “Golden Charter Academy has created something truly unique as the nation’s first TK through eighth-grade environmental stewardship zoo school.”
