Southfield Schools Breaks Ground on University K-12 Academy

Southfield, MI – Southfield Public Schools (SPS) officially broke ground today on its new University K-12 Academy, marking a major milestone in the district’s 2022 Capital Facilities Bond Program.
Joined by elected officials, Board of Education members, scholars, families, staff, alumni, community leaders, and bond partners, district leaders celebrated the beginning of a transformational investment that will expand educational opportunities and prepare generations of scholars for success in college, careers, and life.
The ceremony highlighted the district’s commitment to providing a state-of-the-art learning environment while recognizing the voters and community members whose support made this milestone possible.
“Today, we are building far more than a new school,” said Dr. Jennifer Martin-Green, Superintendent of Southfield Public Schools. “We are building opportunities, expanding possibilities, and investing in the future of every Southfield Public Schools scholar.”
Board of Education President Talisha Belk emphasized the importance of the project as a reflection of the community’s continued belief in the district’s future. “This groundbreaking reflects our community’s confidence in Southfield Public Schools and our shared commitment to ensuring every scholar has access to exceptional educational opportunities for generations to come,” said Belk.
Lauryn Banks, a Southfield Public Schools scholar, also shared remarks during the ceremony, reflecting on the significance of the moment for current and future University K-12 Academy scholars. “Knowing that I may be part of the first graduating class from the new University K-12 Academy makes today’s groundbreaking incredibly meaningful,” Banks said. “Thank you for believing in us and investing in our future.”
District leaders expressed gratitude to the Southfield and Lathrup Village communities for their continued partnership and support. The groundbreaking marks the beginning of construction on a facility that will serve scholars, families, staff, and the broader community for generations to come.
