(FOX40.COM) — The California State Fair returns to Cal Expo this Friday, bringing back fan favorites along with several new attractions in Sacramento.

Fried food, thrill rides and exhibits celebrating California’s culture will all be on display starting Friday as the California State Fair returns for its 173rd year.

This year’s theme is “Wish You Were Here,” designed to make visitors feel like they are traveling across California without ever leaving the fairgrounds.

Returning favorites include the Lowrider Culture Exhibit and livestock competitions.

New this year are the Beer Den, the Enchanted Forest and Tree Circus, and a King Tut experience.

The fair is also introducing the California First Peoples’ Art Showcase, an exhibit featuring Native items including dresses, baskets and tule boats.

Matt Franklin, a Miwok tribal community member, said the showcase highlights the diversity of Native art.

“You’re going to see art throughout the state.”

“Our people live and work in the community. We just have a tremendous showing, and this is a live representation of who we are.”

There are also four new amusement rides: Sound Wave, Viva Las Vegas, Hip-Hop and Atlantis Funhouse. All are expected to be big draws.

With triple-digit temperatures possible, fairgoers will find seven Kaiser Permanente cooling centers across the grounds. Officials are encouraging visitors to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.

“Got these big fans and some misting centers as well. Free sunscreen. So mostly just to help you keep cool during these hot days.”

The concert series also gets underway Friday night, with 13-time Grammy Award winner Babyface taking the stage at 8 p.m.

All of this is happening during the fair’s final summer run, as its dates will move to the fall next year.

“Next year, Sept. 17 will be the opening day of our fair.”

Fair doors open at 10 a.m. Friday. The last day is Sunday, Aug. 2.
